NATO and the Warsaw Pact

THe reason why some european countries and north america made the NATO agreement was to help aid one another when they needed it. Also if one country falls under attack the other countries will help. Well one reason why North America made the NATO agreement was because they felt threaten by Russia. Even though they were allies in WW2 there was nothin dat tied them together once the war was over. In so then came the race 2 c which nation would be da best out of all of them. Who could hae created the more or most dangerous bomb. Who broke the sound barrier and who was the 1st ship or man in space. Of this race and not havin wat North America pact did they made their own and it was called the Warsaw pact.

Film Lesson Schindler's List

The one thing that i remember the most and that touch me was when they were liquidedating the Krakow ghetto and everyone was scaried. All of the Jews were cinfusedbut some wher smart enough 2 hide or try and run away and some did, others late got caught because the Germanys out smarted them and killed them later. But what I liked was when schindler and his wife were lookin down from there horses and saw what was going on and he spot a little gurl and she stood out more then anything else wit her blond curly hair n pink coat. He saw her walk through all of dat mayham and no one spottin her she went inside a building and hide under the bed. Later he saw at one camp that was closing down and they were burning the evidence and when a group of dead people were passin by and he saw the little girl with her pink coat and was gonna get throne in the fire

Film Lesson: The Right Stuff

The Americans were upset that the Russians were ahead of them in simething. They were allies in WW2 but like the war was over they were in compitition to become the best in the world. we thiguht that we were ahead because we broke the sound barrier and from wat we know the Russsians didn't. When we broke the sound barrier we kept it a secret for national security because we didn't want the Russians to Know. But later they send a man to space. Which made us very upset, so we build a space program fast to catch up to then. But late in a couples of years we send a man to the moon so we started to be ahead. The same thing with building more lighter n powerful bombs. We builded the hydrogen bomb later after the atomic bomb. Some scences on the movie that would help me remember what happened in the cold war was all of what Americans did 2 just be slighty ahead.

Night and Fog

The documentary was what you heared of what was happening during the labor camps. This was only 10 years later. But where the documentary was taken of, there were grass growing but no one was in site. The train tracks seemed to be never used. Their were some similiarites between Schinler''s List and this documentary. In all honestly I liked the Hollywood movie better than this documentary. To me the movie seemed more intresting then the documentary. It should how people really felt because their were actors 2 convey their emotions. You could have just imagen wat they went through. The director of the movie saw the documentary first then makin the movie beacuse there were some similar scences between them. For example, that the train going to Ashwitz went thru the middle of the building. Also the train that were taking the Jews to work factories or concentraintion camps. Also it seemed that he did his research on Schindler very well because wat ever were his defects or atrubutes the actor had. Im not sayin that the documentary ws bad only that it wasn't as intreseting as the movie.

The Treaty of Versailles

When the war ended the winning nations made a treaty called the treaty of Versailles, basically blaming Germany for the cause of the war and all of the damages done by the war Germany had to pay so Germany had to pay a large amounts of money to the winning nations. Some of the things that the Treaty restricted Germany to do was not have more than 100,000 men in their army, to have no use of heavy artillery, gas, tanks, submarines, having control of over seas land, Alsace-Lorraine was returned to France, other territory of Germany was taken away and they lost about 13% of land and about the same percentage of population. Also the most important was that Germany was to blame for the beginning of the war, even though it really wasn't Germany who started the war.
I believe that the war was unfair but like Germany had no other choice but to accept because they lost Britain, France, and United States took advantage of it. For example, Britain and Germany before the war were rivals with military power and Germany was quickly becoming powerful and Britain was becoming scaried because they were always the most powerful nation of Europe. Many historians believe what ended WW1 started WW2 because of the sums that Germany had to pay and the lose of the overseas terrioty they had no products to make money so they entered into a kind of depression. People had no jobs, family members where lost because of the war, the other nations took some of Germanys land and people, so they became bitter from it.
Later, came Aldolf Hilter which promise the people to get out of the problem that they had. But who would know that he was a manica who who have killed millions of people, mostly Jews. People were desprite to get out of the depression that came after the post war downfall. There was close to about half of the percentage of people without jobs. So they turned to Aldolf Hilter that promised to punsih the people that put them threw that misery, and stabalizh to Germany.

Mustafa Kemal (Ataturk) and the Modernization of Turkey

The Turkish people hold one man in a pedestal for all the accomplishments he did for his country of Turkey, his name is Ataturk's. He wanted to modernized Turkey and bring it to the 21 century with dignity and class. When the rule of the Ottoman Empire started to decline there were new countries created for example Egypt and Turkey. What Ataturk wanted to do was to care for the people who were neglected by the Religious Empire. One of the ways that he wanted to modernized the lifestyle of the Turkish people is changing the way how the people dress, for example he made a law to abolish the fez. It is a type of hat that the Turkish wore. He wanted the people to dress more like the Europeans with pants and shirts with jackets and a different type of hat. Another way he helped the people of Turkey was letting them practice what ever faith they believe in, it was left to the person's own decision what to practice. It was not really important in politics what one's faith is. There was a majority of Muslam's with a miniorty of Christian's and Jew's.

Gandhi

There were many great leaders of independence, and Gandhi was one of them. He lead the independence of his home country of India from the control of Great Britain. Unlike some of the other independence leaders he used non violent methods. India was controlled by Great Britain during the scramble to conqure land around the world to have more power than other European nations. Gandhi wanted to stop the injust of Great Britians towards the Indians in India and South Africa. One example from the movie, that Great Britain did not treated Indians with the same right that they have, was when Gandhi was thrown litearly out of the train when he did not wanted to sit in 3rd class part of the train when he had a 1st class ticket. Just because he was an indian and they were not allowed to sit in 1st class or have a first class ticket.
Indians in South Africa have to had at all times a type of identification card and the british people who were there did not have to have one. This angered the Indians alot and what also made them mad was that they could not have power in higher places because only the British people can. Gandhi had a plan and wanted the whole Indian people to follow his plan. He wanted Britsh rule over India to weakened so he got everyone to boycott Britsh goods and if they dont buy anything they wouldnt have to pay taxes. So everyday people had to make food and make there own clothing. What they did was even travel 240 miles to the sea coast and get salt beacuse people need some. What helped India get its independence was the WW1 that was going on. Also was the non violent methods Gandhi used. But everytime the Britsh government always tried to find an excuse to send Gandhi to jail, what they didnt know was that it help to increase his popularity. Using non violence was great beacuse it angered a little the Britsh government beacuse they couldnt but them to jail beacuse they did not do anything wrong. It made the Britsh government seem like awful people the ones with no sympathy. And it made people around the world backup Gandhi for the independence of India.
The Indians were tried of the mistreatment of the British government so I believe there independence would have happened any ways but what I do believe was that it would have started and been a different way then when Gandhi was leading them but at the end they would have gotten there independence. They would have used violent methods and would loose hundereds even maybe thousands of people. If Gandhi did not rose up and lead them there would probably be someone else or a group of people that would have gottan control.

The Russian Revolution

Cause of WW1

There has been many tensions between the Europeans countries for sometime before the War began. Many countries started to put money in making their military armies better getting more weapons and better technology. So the other countries did not wanted to be left behind so they also put money in making their military armies better. For example, Germany wanted to make the best fleet of navy ships ever so they made a fleet and like Great Britain had the best in Europe and no other country could compare started to make their fleet better when they heard the news. So putting thousands and maybe even millions in their army they would like to show off their power but they' ll need a reason.
During the same time their was strong nationalism in every part of Europe. Countries were still holding grudges with other nations and wanted to get back at them. For example, France and Germany are rivals which means basically they don't get along with each other and in other words won't ever become allies. France is rivals with Germany because they lost Alsace-Lorraine to Germany. Not everything was rivalry, they were allies before WW1, which were the Serbians with the Russian's.
With military power growing and becoming tense, and the nationalism people felt for their countries still was not enough to push the countries to the brink of war. But there was something that was, the assassination of Franz Ferdinand by a Serbian named .He was part of an intelliengence in Serbia called the Black Hand. Like the assassination was done in Serbia the Austo-Hungarians holded Serbia responiable to what happen.

The Opium Wars

During the Opium War, Britian was fighting against China for the right to sell opium to them. Britian always wanted to trade with China for their tea which was very valuable in Britian. Britian controlled India so they found use of a drug which was opium. They first gave it for free to China and later when they could not stop the use of the drug they wanted them to trade their tea, silver and gold for it. When tthe government found out what was the drug affect on people they wanted the Europeansto stop, but they didnt. They forbide the entering of opium because they were getting made how much silver and gold was leaving their country for it. They even lit some storage of opium that was in China on fire. But somehow it was still entering the borders of China. The government wanted to stop the people smoking opium that anyone who had posession of opium or were helping it to come to China would be killed or seriously punished it was a crime next to murder.
When Great Britian did not wanted to stop it created a war. It is the only war in history to be over a DRUG. For Great Britian far surpass China in technology they crushed China. And the Chineses suffered humilating defeats. In 1842 they had to make a treaty of peace which China wasnt to happy about called The Treaty of Nanking. The treaty mosty benfited Great Britian for example for anything China had to always be for Great Britian. If any Britian citizen would do any crime in China the Britians laws would be held against him instead of the ones in China. The Chinese had to open five ports for British trade like Shanghai,Canton, Amoy, Foochow and Ningpo. No restrictions can be placed on British trade, which menas Britian can still bring Opium to China which unfortunity more than doubled in 30 yrs of the treaty. Many Chineses people were drug addicts. Also years later China had to sign, when they did not want to, similar treaties to with France and the United States.

Film in Class

The parts that we watch during class of the film said a great deal about European. The film was based on the exbitition made in Africa of John Speke and Richard Burnet journey. The Europeans were fasnatideted by the vast size of the Nile River. The Europeans were never able to get to the middle of Africa because of the enormous size of the Sahara Dessert. The Europeans also tried going upwards the river but it never worked, all of the people that tried died. The first time that they went to Africa they were attacked by the local native tribes. When they got the money for another intent to go to Africa they had much more people, money and supplies. They were traveling through Africa for about 6 months and they haven;t found anything yet. Richard Burnet developed a diease in his leg, which made it hard for him to walk. For John Speke it was his lost of hearing in one ear, it was due to the immense amount of insects, that one went in his ear.
When a tribe found that they were in their territory, all of who were traveling had to present the king with a gift. The King like Richard Burnet better and made him stay behind while John was in search for the Nile River. The River that they found before was not the Nile ( they did not believe it was). The body of water that they found had no lakes following out of it. When John found a body of water he though it was the Nile River it was so huge that he was not able to walk around it. When he went and told Richard, Richard did not believe it was the Nile. John broke the therometer that he estimated it's volume and current. So their it wasn't real proof. John named it Lake Victoria. When they went to tell why they believe it either was or not to the council of National Geographic. It was during that meeting that John went hunting and committed suicide and was dead. 30 years later, it was the scramble of the Europeans countires to control Africa with machine guns and they had the cure for malaria. When the Europeans came and conquered there was about 5% of Africa free from the control of European nations.

The Meiji Restoration of Japan

Matthew Perry gave the Japanese no choice but to sign the trade treaty. He showed up to the Japanese ports with 4 ships. What suprised the Japanese people the most were how the ships were powered, like they dont have communication with the outer world they havent know about the technology being invented, the stream engine took their breath away. The letter that was sent for Mathew Perry to deliever was the nicest it could be but he sended it with the wrong message. He would not leave the Japanese ports until they were able to have food supply, water and coal. What inpressed the Japanese was the techonology the Westerns had and the coal engine that their ships had.
The Japanese though that they were ahead in intelligance and superior than foreign countries. The fire power that Matthew Perry had could easily kill dozens of the best samarizes that they could offer. Then when they got the idea that they were behind in the moderaiztion of everyone else. The Meiji emerpor sent out men to diiferent countries to study their government and their way of living. So he would figure out which are better. For example, something that they copied from America was that all children have to go to school. Same process goes for technology they get all of these things afrom other place and make them better. Right now Japan is the best around the world in technology. What they did helped them to grow and become the best. Like many names for example Sony, Mistiudshi, Toyata, Acura and so many more.
An archipelago is a chain of islands. There is an active volcano underneath and when it erupts it creats an island. But what make an archipelago is that there is a plate that shifts making a chain of islands whenever the volcano erupts. Another example of archipelago are the Hawaiian islands.

Karl Maxx and Communism

Karl Maxx idea of Communism was to create a better soicity, he had many radical idea's of things and many time it got him into many trouble. He did believe that capitalism and socialism was not a good idea and so he . He and a friend Eagels both coauthored "The Communist Manifesto" it describes how communism was supposed to become in the future. Communism is like in the word means common, it is were nobody owns anything but the government and the people produce what they need, so there is nobody better than anybody else everyone earns the same. Most of the ideas of communism came from Karl Maxx and a few countries now are run by communism.
Karl Maxx dislike the idea of capitlism he believe that it was self destructing and also the idea of soicalism. In the eyes of Karl Maxx he believed that the only worthy choice of basing a government was Communism. Their were no needs of class and no one being less worthy than someone else and everybody could be at peace. To Karl Maxx and to me the good guys were the works they went to work did most of all the labor in production for the wealthy bourgeoisie which were the people in charge. The bad guys were them they did not helped the working class. The enviornment of the factories were horrible and earned very little for their labor, worked from dusk til dawn. The idea of commusism did not go far only a couple of countries are commusim for example, Cuba and China but they are not the pure form of communism that Karl Maxx was talking about. China for example does production for other countries and itself and trades with others as well. Cubas form of government is strict and run by a dictator and many people leave to find a better life.

Karl Maxx and the Industrial Revolution

Karl Maxx did not like the idea of the Industrial Revolution. He thought that the workers should had, had more power than the owner's of the factories and farms. The population of workers out numbered those of the owner's from 90:10. He wanted the workers to start a revolution against their owner's. It wasn't fair to him that the one's who worked hard for the factory (workers) didn't get paid enough or were treated harshly, while the owner's of the factory get all of the money and live a lavish life style. What he saw in the Industrial Revolution inspired him to create communism. Communism you can tell by the name comes from the word common. Everyone should be treated the same, earn the same amount of money, eveyone should create the things they only needed. Many people loved his idea of Communism that they converted their government to Communism for example China, Russia at one point, North Korea and Cuba. Sadly, they weren't the pure form of Communism that Karl Maxx had invision. For example, China export many things for other countries like us, and Cuba has a dictatorial government and are very strict just like the other communiste countries.

Nationalism

What nationalism means is pride in ones country. The way I am nationalitic is when their is a soccer game on. I root for the Ecuador team seeing if they could win. When I see the game I'm always with my family and all of us be surrounding the TV yelling at the other team and the referses. Even if they dont win we still be rooting for them on the next game beacuse we love our country and we want them to win.
Itlay before it was present day Italy was controled by an empire that was later crush and was sperated into states. How nationlism was used to get everybody who loved their country of Italy together.

Simon Bolivar and Latin American Revolution's

What the articles basicilly talk about was how he freed many countries in South America from Spanish rule and got their independence. He was a creoles with rich parents but unfortunlly died when he was 9 yrs old. He uncle who beacame his guardian send him to Spain to continue his studies. He married at the age of 19 and when he brought his wife to South America she she saidly died of yellow fever. He returned to Spain where he study many things, and got the idea that he was like the savor of South America and wanted them to become independent. He created an army a was able to freed Venezueal, Colombia, Panama, Ecuador and Peru he wanted to fulfill his dream and create Grand Colombia but each country grew apart and separted. He died at the age of 47 of tubericuoloes. In honor of what he did there was a country named after him which is present day Boliva. It must feel pretty good having a country named after you even if you dont know it.

Robespierre and the Reign of Terror

After the French Revolution was finished and won by the peasents and the middle-class people everyone though they could live their lives in peace.(That was an understatement.) When the French Revolution was over the Reign of Terror began. In France their was no control on it's people. It took 2 yrs for the constitution to be made. Also there have been many radicials- they wanted a dracite change in the government- that did many things.They did not seem to like the idea of having a limiting monarchy. The ones that were to be feared were the Jacobins, they used an invention that was recently created to bee-head anybody that was against what they were trying to do it was called the Guillotine.
Robespierre was the first one who was able to get control over the French people. You can tell that Robespierre was a radicals because of what he as doing for example he changed the claender to 12 montths 30 days no Sunday beacuse they did not believe in religious days, took all the Queen's,King's and Jacks' out of playing cards, people were so scared by him-mostly nobles and clergy- that they had to change their last name into something normal or were risked into getting killed and pretty much closed down all the churchs in Paris. Many people who wanted a monarchy or were nobles feared him beacuse they were scared that he could kill them. When Robespierre became Committee of Public Safety. he could send who ever he believe against them to the guillotine and bee-headed them. I dont think that he saw himself as a bad person because he was mostly trying to justify what was going on.

The French Revolution

1.The reason why many people were critical about the nobility, the king and the clergy was because, most people thought that they were unfair that they nevered gave the third estate rights in the government even though it made up most of the population in France. The people who got all the percius in life were the King, nobles and the clergy but the ones that had to do most of the work were the rest who were left over, the third estate. That is why in the picture you see a man carrying two other people a very elegent dresses man and another person holding the bible represent the three estates.
2. What a french peasent would grumble about during the Frech Revolution was they had no rights, no part in government, were restricted to do many things, had to pay huge taxes, the other two estes that mad only about 2 % of the population had the power to over ride their power which was the rest of the population the 98% of it, they weren't treated the same as the nobles or clergy or were treated unfair by them.
3. The point that I think the cartonist was trying to make was how the estates were with one another. The third estate had the burden to carry the other two estates. Who did most of the work were the third estate beacuse they had greatest percentage of the population. If you had to see the first two estates did nothing they didn't have to do labor or pay taxes; or just had to pay a small fraction for the taxes.
4. He decribes from first hand account of what a person during the French Revloution had to endure. The way that they seem to have nothing but get somewhere things they needed to pay off as taxes to one lord and another plus also paying the King's taxes. It seemed as if they lived frusteraed lives thinking ow they could get food to pay off tax. The people were peasents and the lords had no regared for that ; to be a peasant it means your poor and dont have much money but yet they get charged with heavy taxes. Who would have not revolted against their government if they were treated this unfair.
5. Who wouldn't resent the rich in these circumstance. They got paid more then the peasents but yet they weren't taxed. It also seemed unfair that the frist two estates had the power to control the third estate when it made up 2% of the population. A good reason to resent them is that the third estate has to carry the other two estates.
6. The epople wh owould be most influnced by this would be the third estate. It talk about a person having the right to be free that all men are equal and no else had the right to control others. What this writing is saying is what ever the other to estates are doing isn't correct, everyone should have rights and be treated the same.
7. I think that the reason why the plamphet written in source D was banned beacuse the first two estates didn't want people of France to get anger for what they are doing. The plamphet ralks about being equal and they don't want any riots to occur beacuse of it. They don't want anybody questioning their power over the people, and they believed that the plamphet would do just that.
